My Top 10 Solo Travel Safety Hacks To Make Travelling Stress Free

Heading out on a solo travel adventure? Safety is always one of my top priorities, and a little planning and research can help loads! Below, I’ve shared my top 10 solo travel safety hacks that help make me (and hopefully will help you) feel confident and secure every step of the way. Whether you're trekking through remote mountains, exploring bustling cities, or lounging on white sandy beaches, these hacks will help you navigate any situation with ease.

1. Make safety your priority

Solo travel can be a really exciting experience, but it's important to prioritise your safety before anything else, after all, you only get one life! Before you even start planning your journey, take some time to research the potential risks and challenges of your chosen destination. Familiarise yourself with local customs, laws, and any potential health concerns. This knowledge will help you make informed decisions and reduce the chances of encountering any issues.

Planning your itinerary is another crucial aspect of solo travel safety. While spontaneity can be exciting, having a well-thought-out plan can ensure that you have a structured framework to rely on. Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, so they know where you'll be at all times. This way, if anything goes wrong, someone will have a general idea of your whereabouts. Remember, being prepared is key to staying safe.

2. Researching your destination

As I’ve said in point 1, before setting off on your solo adventure, it's essential to thoroughly research your destination.

Check the travel advisories issued by your country's government and stay updated on any recent developments.

Understanding the cultural norms and potential risks will help you blend in and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

Additionally, research transportation options, including public transportation and taxi services. Find out which modes of transportation are considered safe, and if necessary, pre-book reliable transportation services to avoid any potential scams or unsafe situations. Being well-informed about your destination will give you the confidence to navigate safely.

3. Planning your itinerary

Creating a detailed itinerary is a crucial step in solo travel safety. Avoid travelling to unfamiliar or remote areas on your own, especially at night. Instead, opt for well-known tourist spots or areas recommended by trusted sources, or make friends and go with them!

When planning, consider the local customs and traditions. Research local holidays, festivals, or events that may impact your travel plans. Some destinations may experience increased crime rates or crowded streets during certain celebrations, so it's important to be aware and adjust your itinerary accordingly. If you’re going to specifically enjoy these celebrations, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and know how to get back to your accommodation.

Remember, flexibility is key. Allow for some downtime in your schedule to rest and recharge. Overloading your itinerary can lead to exhaustion and make you more vulnerable to accidents or mishaps. Strike a balance between exploration and relaxation to ensure an stress-free journey.

4. Packing essentials for solo travel safety

Packing strategically is so important to staying safe when travelling alone, especially because nowadays all of our tickets etc are on our phones, and what can you do without your passport? Start with a well-organised and secure travel bag or backpack that has sturdy locks or zippers. Invest in a reliable luggage lock to secure your belongings during transit or when leaving them in your accommodation.

Additionally, bring a basic first aid kit with essential medications, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions. It's always better to be prepared for minor injuries or illnesses. One thing I always keep handy is sterile wipes, Ibuprofen, 4Head and plasters. I’ve cut my hand on the toilet roll holder at an airport in Argentina and having the wipes was so useful!

Another important safety hack is to make copies of your important documents, such as your passport, identification cards, and travel insurance. Store these copies separately from the originals, either in a secure online storage service or with a trusted friend or family member. In case of loss or theft, having copies will simplify the process of replacing the documents. Also, have an online version of them handy just in case.

5. Staying connected while travelling solo

Staying connected is crucial when travelling solo. Make sure to have a reliable means of communication, such as a fully charged mobile phone and a portable charger. Research and purchase a local SIM card or an international data plan to ensure you have access to the internet and can make calls in case of emergencies. (There are even apps where you can download SIM cards now!) If you’re from the UK double check your data plan if travelling to Europe, I’m on Sky and it’s only £6 a day to connect to the internet and honestly, to me it’s the easiest option and worth it, but not all providers have the same plans.

Additionally, inform your friends and family about your travel plans and share your contact information. Regularly check in with them to let them know you're safe. But be cautious about sharing too much personal information online, as it could compromise your safety. NEVER EVER share your boarding pass, and if you can restrain yourself from sharing information on social media about your whereabouts in real-time.

6. Tips for navigating public transportation safely

Public transportation is often the most convenient and cost-effective way to get around when travelling solo. However, it's important to take precautions to ensure your safety. Research the local transportation system before your trip to familiarise yourself with routes, schedules, and any safety concerns.

When using public transportation, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas, opt for well-lit and busy stops or stations. Sit near the driver or conductor, or choose seats close to other passengers. Avoid displaying valuable items, such as expensive jewellery or electronics, which may attract unwanted attention.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts. If something feels off or uncomfortable, it's better to err on the side of caution and find an alternative mode of transportation. Remember, your safety is paramount, and it's okay to prioritise it over convenience or cash. There have been numerous times where I’ve found it the better option to ask the hotel to book me a taxi somewhere or jump in an Uber or similar as I’m a lot more familiar with these and I know they’re registered and can be tracked.

7. Finding safe accommodation

Choosing safe accommodation is vital for solo travel safety. Look for reputable accommodations that have positive reviews and a strong track record of guest safety. Consider staying in well-established hotels or guesthouses that offer security measures such as 24/7 reception, CCTV surveillance, and secure access control.

When booking accommodations, research the neighbourhood and its safety reputation. Opt for centrally located areas with good lighting and easy access to public transportation. Read reviews from previous solo travellers to get an idea of the safety and comfort levels.

Upon arrival at your accommodation, familiarise yourself with emergency exits, fire escape routes, and any safety protocols. Keep your room locked at all times and use the room safe or lockers provided to store your valuables. I’ve listed the portable door lock I purchased here - this makes me feel a lot safer when sleeping in a hotel room alone, and I always bring it with me just in case I ever feel like I need it, even if I’m travelling with someone else.

8. Managing your finances and valuables while travelling solo

Managing your finances and valuables effectively is essential for solo travel safety. Avoid carrying excessive amounts of cash and consider using a travel debit or credit card that offers fraud protection and low foreign transaction fees. Keep your wallet or purse secured at all times, using an anti-theft bag or a money belt.

I tend to take the following cards with me: Monzo, Revolut and American Express. All of these I have apps for on my phone so if I ever lose them I can cancel them immediately. I also never store them in the same place.

When withdrawing cash from ATMs, choose well-lit and secure locations, preferably within a bank or a reputable establishment. Be cautious of anyone who may be observing your transaction and shield your PIN number as you enter it.

9. Trusting your instincts

Pay attention to your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. Be mindful of people who may be overly friendly or intrusive, as they might have ulterior motives, even in the daytime! In Barcelona, there were a couple of times I felt like there were groups of men planning theft working together. It might not have been the case, but I always followed my instinct and kept to the busier streets and put my phone away.

Avoid walking alone at night, especially in poorly lit or isolated areas. Consider using transportation services, such as taxis or rideshare apps, to minimise the risks.

Basically, listen to your gut feelings. If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. It's better to be overly cautious than to put yourself in harm's way. Trust your instincts and prioritise your personal safety above all else.

10. Solo travel safety resources and apps

Lastly, take advantage of the numerous resources and apps available to enhance your solo travel safety. Research and bookmark trusted websites that provide safety tips and information specific to your destination. These resources can offer valuable insights and guidance on staying safe during your travels.

Consider downloading safety apps that provide real-time information on crime rates, emergency services, and local safety alerts. Some apps also offer features like virtual escorts or emergency panic buttons. Research and choose the ones that best suit your needs and preferences.

Above all, remember, solo travel is an incredible opportunity to explore on your terms. With the right precautions and a proactive approach to your safety, you can enjoy a stress-free adventure filled with unforgettable experiences. Safe travels!
