Hotel Review: Unveiling The Theatrum Rooms and Suites

Verona is a very historic city located in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is renowned for its rich history, architecture, and cultural significance, and it is honestly one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited. If you like quaint little places with churches, markets, piazzas to watch the world go by and scenic walks, I cannot recommend it enough!

Like Lucca, this is another city where you walk over a bridge and into a doorway which can only be likened to something out of a medieval painting to enter. Generally, the city boasts impressive architecture from various periods, including medieval, Renaissance, and Gothic styles, and the hotels and places to stay generally still adhere to these architectural types.

The location:

We didn’t stay in the centre, but a very short walk away (literally the other side of the bridge) in a building which had clearly been renovated inside, but blended in so well with its surroundings, it took us a minute to find!

For access to the city, I would say that the Theatrum Rooms and Suites were in a perfect location. When it’s only a short walk (under 5 minutes) to the city centre, I generally think it’s worth it to save those extra pennies for experiences and treats whilst you’re away.

One point I do feel like I need to mention, is that although we found a pharmacy nearby pretty easily, we weren't able to find a supermarket until we got into the centre. I think if we had breakfast included, then this wouldn’t have been an issue, but as we didn’t it was a little annoying that first day. Lots of the shops and cafes weren’t open as early as we were out exploring, and I can see if you were travelling with children etc this might be an issue.

Customer service:

The team at Teatrum Rooms and Suites were fantastic and they had great communication with us even before we’d left. They checked in with us that our flight was on time and had landed. That we knew how to get there from the airport (we had pre-booked a taxi so this was very easy!) and even when we arrived and couldn’t find it they came out and found us (literally standing outside clueless!).

When we had checked in, they gave us the map and pointed out the main attractions, and were super helpful in refilling coffee etc when we asked them to. (My mum really likes her coffee!) They helped me find the best taxi app to download (spoiler alert, it’s called Taxi) and let us stay in the lobby until we were ready to go to the airport on the Monday. By this time we were both feeling a bit ill and no attractions were open, so we just needed a quiet space to zone out!

I couldn’t fault them at all. They were brilliant.

The rooms:

This was one of the loveliest hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, in a while! It was huge, and quirky, with a huge mural on the wall and it was spotlessly clean. I loved the bathroom too, it felt very modern, and this is a tiny thing, but there was actually space to put my shower bits! You don’t know how annoying this is when you get somewhere and have to put your shower gels etc on the floor of the shower and they get all wet and gross.

In terms of comfort, I found that the room we stayed in (The Carmen Suite) had a lot of road noise at night. We were in a room that looked out directly onto the road so of course you expect it a bit, but it felt very loud at times, especially when emergency vehicles were passing. The pillows were also super hard, but I think this is a personal preference thing. Neither of these things would put me off staying here again, but I’d ask for a different room (and maybe bring a travel pillow).

The price:

We paid £280 for 3 nights at the beginning of December (over a weekend). I think this is probably a little more pricey than I’d usually spend on a hotel generally, but thinking about the time of the year and how big the room was, coupled with how close it was to the town centre, I think this was worth it.

After having a quick look at booking.com, I do think that the December stay raised the price. April/May prices are around £100 cheaper. There are cheaper privately hosted rooms you can rent too.

Things to consider:

  • Breakfast is not included. If this is important to you, this isn’t a great option.

  • If you’re a light sleeper, make sure you’re not in the Carmen Suite. I can’t speak for other rooms, but this one definitely won’t be for you.

  • Consider travelling at a different time of year if the price point is too high. Having a play with dates really does bring the price down.

  • Make sure you have WhatsApp downloaded as this was our main port of communication before/ during the trip.

How to book:

Like most of my stays, I booked through booking.com. You can find the link to this property here.
