Visiting the smallest bar IN THE WORLD!
Saying that something is the smallest anything in the world often feels like a bit of an exaggeration, but when it comes to this little bar, BackDoor 43 in Milan, I have to admit, the title fits it quite nicely!
Why visit the smallest bar in the world?
Aside from the fact that it's pretty cool to say that you've been to the smallest bar in the world (or at least in Europe/ Italy), I love finding quirky little things that you don't see every day. The bar itself is almost like a museum, with collectable bottles lining the shelves, and the attention to detail in the drinks is incredible. I mean it should be, with only two people allowed into the bar at any one point! If you enjoy cocktails and have some free time I'd add this to your itinerary.
BackDoor 43: Is it really that small?
BackDoor 43 is just 13 square feet and is set up like a little speakeasy that you need a password to enter. As I've said, only two people are allowed in the bar at a time (which is why you need to book this in advance). There are literally two stalls and then the bar. It's a very up close and personal experience I have to say!
Where can I find it?
From the street, you could easily miss it. It’s literally a door snuggled between very bustling restraunts and bars, just a stones throw from the canal. Even though I booked it in advance and had it saved to my Google Maps, I found it quite difficult to find as it just as easily have been a flat as a bar, and the day we went their was actually noone there. (More on this later).
How does it work?
First, book your tickets online here. If you know this is definitely an experience you'd like to have, book as soon as you can. I always think it's better to book too far in advance than to miss out if it's something I really want to do. You'll be asked to select a time and you'll effectively buy your ticket (which includes your drink).
Next you'll be emailed the password. Once you get there you'll need to ring the bell and either tell them the password / show them the confirmation email and you'll be let in.
There are two stalls for you and your travel buddy, and then the bar. The bartender will ask you a few questions and then will make you a completely bespoke and unique cocktail from your answers. I was pretty worried about this if I'm honest as I'm a bit fussy with my drinks, but I actually loved it and so did my mum!
You do only get the one drink, but honestly, I think that's plenty! It's a very lovely and almost exclusive drinks experience, but I'm used to bars being a little more lively. However, there are plenty of bars in this area, including next door if you'd like to indulge a little more!
Are the drinks expensive?
The drink you get is included in your 'ticket' to the bar, once you've booked in and paid you're all set!
Would you recommend visiting BackDoor 43?
In one word yes. It's a really unique experience and something new to try. If you like cocktails you'll probably enjoy this and if you're looking for somewhere to go before a night out this would be the perfect thing for after dinner and pre-dancing (even if you did want to do a bit of bar hopping after)! Tickets aren't too expensive either considering your drink is included.
