Eating my way through Porto with Eating Europe!
Food is such a huge part of experiencing a different culture. From the key flavours to the dishes that the region is known for. This is why when I saw that Get Your Guide had a food tour in Porto, I had to book.
Before I start this post, I'll preface it by saying that I loved this tour so much! There were only four of us including the guide, and we had such a lovely time walking around the city and eating a bunch of different food, most of which I hadn't even heard of.
The meeting point:
I completely missed my group at first, despite the meeting point on the app being super clear, outside one of the most decorative and tiled churches in Porto. It was just that I'd glimpsed the tour guide’s bag that I realised my group were already waiting!
I was early anyway so it didn't matter too much thankfully. I do wish he had a more obvious sign for Eating Europe though to avoid that initial confusion.
The tour:
Our guide whisked us off to our first restaurant pretty quickly. Once seated at a table at the back we were introduced to one another before being given green wine and plates with bread, meat and cheese. One of the things that was such a perk of being on this food tour was that the guy taking us around was from Porto and had so much information to share and was super passionate about it too. I adored the American couple that were on the tour with me as well.
The restaurant we were sat in was covered in Porto FC memorabilia and the locals were sat at the bar, chatting and watching sports on the TV in the corner.
When we were here chatting, the guide called ahead to make sure there were veggie options available for me when we arrived. This was so nice and made me feel so reassured considering a lot of Portuguese food is heavy in fish or meat. I was so glad to be with someone who could speak Portuguese as I was able to have veggie versions of literally everything and I didn’t feel like I missed out at all! I wouldn’t have known where to go for these treats without it.
We had tables reserved for us in every single place we went to. It felt very well organised and I loved skipping the cues when there were lines of people outside!
My foodie highlights:
🩷 A drink called a “Tango”. This was cranberry syrup with beer. I’m not a big beer drinker, but this was actually quite nice. If you like sweet drinks or cocktails, I’d recommend giving this a try!
🩷 Veggie Francesinha. A Francesinha is a deep-fried sandwich covered in cheese, swimming in a sauce spiced with peri peri. The non-veggie version is stuffed with about five types of meat, but the veggie one was full of vegetables, so it’s healthy right?
🩷 The Porto version of Pasteis de Nata. It’s a rectangle rather in a little tartlet, but it’s equally as delicious and I could have eaten about 10!
How to book:
The food tour, including the guide, food and accompanying drinks was £77.53. For everything included this was such good value! I really liked that this was booked and paid for before I even went on holiday through GetYourGuide.
